An Unexpected Journey

My morning started with a text message from my junking buddy, Bargain Hunter:  "Can you be dressed and meet me in an hour?"  When I asked where we were going, she just said, "Not telling...but you'll really like it!"

Never mind cleaning the bathrooms...or watering the garden...or working in the barn -- I was going on an adventure!

We'd talked a lot about how the sales always seemed better in the older neighborhoods around Detroit than they are by us and that we wanted to go to some garage sales there.  That's what we did today!  Bargain Hunter had four sales mapped out and ready to go.

The first sale was advertised as 'Pyrex and Vintage'.  I felt sure the Pyrex would be all gone, but it wasn't -- there was a lot there, plus some other good stuff.  I got a few things for my collection and a birthday gift for someone (I can't tell, in case she sees this post)
This Bluebirds casserole and Apple Tree carafe will look great in my kitchen!
Gold spattered Fire King baking dish in a white metal cradle
Sale #2 was a real frog.  Advertised as 'vintage', but the oldest thing there was from the late 90s -- not my idea of old (I have kids older than most of the stuff at that sale)!

Next stop was an estate sale and it was a Prince (with a capital P)!  The basement was packed.  I got so much Christmas and fun kids' stuff there that I could hardly claim it fast enough.  I filled a plastic salad bowl with Christmas kitsch AND got a Santa & sleigh for just $4!
Santa & his sleigh have the original box.  The spaghetti Santa has blue rhinestone eyes (just a little creepy)
Gurley candles and Hong Kong nativities are always popular
Love this Japanese stocking face pose doll
I also picked up 2 partial rolls of vintage Christmas wrap and a big roll of commercial Christmas paper.  I think I'll use it to wrap my Etsy orders this holiday season.   Today was the second day of the sale, so everything was 25% off, too!  The estate sale company was a new one to me, but one I'll watch for in the future --  the people running it were really nice and VERY organized (always a plus).
The chalkware puppy will have to stay here, I think...I've really become attached to him
Fun kids' books
I think the paper dolls go with the Betsy McCall set...they have mohair doll hair
Embroidered tea towels
Of course, there had to be a pennant there somewhere!
The last place we went to was another estate sale with lots of fishing stuff.  I got a few lures for my son and a Pyrex percolator.  Bargain Hunter found a live catch basket and an anchor for her son...the guys made out pretty well at that sale!
Cowboy and western glasses are so cool!
So a big thank you to Bargain Hunter and her spur-of-the-moment invitation!  This adventure was a happy end to a long week of work.  I'll be up for an unexpected journey any time.

Hope you have a great weekend!

Hooked on Vintage Christmas

Reality check:  Christmas was over 41 days ago.  Around here, though, it seems that Christmas never really goes away!

Every year my aunt gives me money at Christmas, which she tells me has to be spent just for me -- not on the house or for things for the family.  I think about getting clothes, shoes or make-up, but that never happens.  The money gets spent at antique malls, estate sales and flea markets and, more often than not, on vintage Christmas.

Look at the treasures I've found so far this year:

I found this little sweetie at my 'home' antique mall, Livingston Antique Outlet.  He's a mid-century Santa, made in Japan.  I think he's going to stay up all year long in my china cabinet, because he's just so cute!  I'm always so impressed by the effort and attention to detail that these old decorations had.  Even though they were considered cheap little items, they're really complex.

Look at his sweet spun cotton face
The detail on the packages is remarkable.  Look at the little pipe-cleaner candy cane on the package and the 'extras' in the chimney next to the bottle brush tree
Santa even has extra gifts in the net bag on his back
These Gurley tapers are from our mall, too.  I've got a ridiculous amount large collection of Gurley and Tavern candles, but I've never seen tapers before.  Again, there's great attention to detail -- Santa's boots are painted black that there are paint dot decorations up and down the tapers.
Gurley Santa taper candles
The foil candle holders were in a booth near the one where the candles were -- with their original box.  All of it - candles and holders - were in close to mint condition
The holders cost 39 cents back in the day
Who wouldn't love to have a pair of dancing Santas lighting their Christmas dinner table?
I think I showed you this cool tinsel tree already, but I wanted to share it again.   I found that in Allen, Michigan on a trip with my junking buddy Bargain Hunter.  In fact, I almost left without it and she talked me into going back for it -- good thing, too, or I'd have been driving back down to Allen (almost 2 hours away) the next day!
A year ago my sister-in-law sent me a picture of some handpainted mirror ornaments that came to her from her grandmother's decorations.  She asked if I ever see them and would I watch for some more -- in fact, I'd never even heard of them.

They're called Mirrorettes and were sold in packages of 6 or more back in the 1950s.  I started watching for them at sales (I've never found any) and on Ebay, where they sell for a lot and are usually in poor condition.   I won't pay the ridiculously high prices they usually go for, but finally managed to get these six -- all in good condition for a more reasonable price.  My sister-in-law and I will split the set, so now I'll have a few.
They have different picture on the back.  They're actually two separate handpainted mirrors glued together back-to-back
Here's what they looked like in their package
Credit to an Ebay listing for this picture -- this isn't my set

A Fun Day & A Kiss for a Prince

I went down to Jackson today to have lunch with my friend who moved there (and to pick up the bookcase I bought, but had to leave, last time I visited).  There was an indoor flea market there, billed as a 'Cabin Fever' event. I'd gone to this market a few times and it was always just so-so -- some prices reasonable, lots of prices high and also lots of 'tube socks' (my code for new dollar-store-type stuff).  I wanted to spend the day with my friend, though, so it was definitely worth the trip.

The flea market turned out to be a real prince this year!  We got there about 10:30 and it started at 11.  As in the past, people started lining up at the door then.  In past years, though, they wouldn't let the shoppers in until the stroke of 11.  They'd let you into an entry area of the building where you stood there crammed in like cattle, looking at the dealers (who were all ready to sell and stood there looking at you)!  This year, though, they just let us in!  The prices were still all over the place but there was a lot of great stuff and I bought some of it.

After we shopped, we went to lunch and sat and talked for hours -- we caught up on our families and what we've been doing and went down one conversational bunny trail after another (the way good friends do when they've known each other for years).  I've really missed seeing her all the time and it was just a boost for my spirits to get a long visit.

Maybe you want to see what I bought, though...
I love these little 1950s Japanese figures, too.  I don't think they're going to leave my living room
I love these chalkware elephants!
The crocheted hotpad is just like the ones with pop bottle caps, but it's jar lids.  I've never seen one this big before.  The little blue hankie has 'To my wife with love  Iceland, 1942' painted on it.
More Gurley candles -- I can't resist!
These ornaments are unusual -- they're plastic and have little figures suspended inside.  At 50 cents each they were worth it
3 really odd postcards from 1905 & 1907.  I have no idea what 'Sure Mike' means!  The ride around town is someone in the back of a police wagon
I saved the best for last!  This is a BIG framed paint-by-number of flamingos (really well painted, too) -- it combines two of my favorite collectibles.  I think I'll keep it.
I hope you all had good shopping this week!  I'm off to check out your blogs now...

Finishing Up an Odd Job

I don't know how things are at your house, but there's nothing like the impending visit of houseguests to get me moving on finishing up odd jobs.  Things I've been happy to let slide for months weeks suddenly take on a new importance.

We're having family visit after Christmas, and I FINALLY hung up a great 1950s wall box that I'd gotten at an estate sale.  I've had this sitting on the cabinet that it's hanging over (now) for almost a year.  It had been there so long that, when I showed Mr. KV what I'd done, he said  "Oh, that hangs on the wall? I thought it was supposed to sit on the cabinet!"
The cabinet was my aunt's, the Christmas tree stand was given to me by my mother-in-law.  It was her great-grandmother's and is from the 1800s -- it winds up and plays 'Silent Night' and 'Kling, Glockchen'.  The cream colored felt tree skirt is from the 1960s, I think -- I picked it up a few years ago.
Like all odd jobs done close to the arrival of company, completing one leads to another.  Once I'd hung up the box, I had to figure out what to put in it.
It turned out to be easier to fill the box than I'd expected...  I added a few vintage Christmas items -- a bottle brush wreath, Gurley Santa candle & a pair of Lefton angels.  The tin is a souvenir from King George's coronation in 1937 (no, I wasn't there to get it in person...) The three English money boxes are from King Edward's & King George's reigns.  The loving cup is one that my Aunt Gene won in tennis in her youth in the 1940s and the Scottie with the Haggis is a gift from her -- she's very proud of our Scottish heritage!  Since the cabinet below the box used to belong to her, it seems only fitting that some of her favorite things are displayed above it, along with some of mine.

Gurley Christmas Candles

Have I mentioned that I like Gurley candles?
Gurleys on the hoosier cabinet
the Amen corner
the elves in the middle
the snowmen
the angels on an old spice cabinet
the pastel angels in the back row are really hard to find
the Santas on my great-great aunt's treadle sewing machine
Do you think there's a 12-step group for Gurley addicts?

A Fun Day Out with Friends

One of our local antique malls, Williamston Antique Market, had their Christmas Open House & sale today and I went with 5 friends from work.  We had such a good time!  I'm always amazed to see how different everyone's taste is, but we all seemed to zero in on the vintage Christmas items.  My friend Bargain Hunter got the find of the day -- a 4' Aluminum Pom Pom tipped tree.  It will look great with all her vintage ornaments!

I bought a Tavern (Gurley) candle -- Santa & his sleigh -- with its original box, a few ornaments and a Christmas patterned box.  I love those old covered boxes because they make great 'staging areas' for smaller things and add some height to any shelf.

After the Open House we all went out to lunch.  I had so much to do this weekend, but a little R & R is a good thing -- especially with friends!  They're much more important that crossing one more thing (or two) off the to-do list!

The Benefits of Taking an Early Lunch

If you've read my blog for a while, you know that I recently went back to work at my day job.  I have been really concerned about how I'd manage to keep my Etsy and antique business going when I have almost no time to shop and prep the things I sell.

Yesterday, I saw that there was an estate sale at an old farm right by the place where I work.  I asked my boss if I could take my lunch early (9:45 is a pretty early lunch) and, when she heard that it was to go shop, she asked if she could go along.  She'd never been to an estate sale before!

We got there about 15 minutes after they opened (though I heard that, being a family-run sale, they'd opened almost an hour early).  I found some really good stuff, but it certainly felt strange to be walking through the fields, the barn and the dirt & stone wall basement in my 'business casual' work clothes!  I think my boss had fun, though she didn't buy anything.  She lived not far from there and told me the history of the family -- at one time they'd owned 100s of acres of land all around and the earliest subdivisions had their name!

Here are some of the treasures I picked up at lunch:
An assortment of Gurley candles
A large clothespin bag FULL of vintage clothespins and 2 graniteware tubs
Look at the tiny plastic ornaments -- is that the angel's bottom that we see?!
This cute little child's umbrella has a bunny for the handle
3 inlaid USA puzzles from the 1950s and 60s
A big bag of old garland -- for .25, who could pass it up?
I love these toys from the 1950s -- I used to have a red cowboy hat just like this!
This is my favorite thing == a truly kitschy, 18" high K-mart Christmas tree with little ornaments
I'm including this pic because this is my entry in JunkerNewbie's 'Would You Buy It Wednesday.   So, would you buy it for $2?

This is a very cool 1950s 45 record carrier -- never used
I'm submitting my kitschy Christmas tree and linking up to 'Would You Buy It Wednesday" at JunkerNewbie's blog.
I just wish there were more estate sales close enough to go to on my lunch hour!
