Snowy Saturday Antique Show

Today was the local Masonic lodge's annual antique show.  Since I found so much stuff yesterday in Jackson, I didn't make the effort to get out and be in line when they opened at 9:00 am today.  It was a good decision, because it was snowing (again) and our roads were really slippery -- I was glad I'd waited for it to warm up to 28 degrees.  The weather kept people away, too, so it wasn't crowded until just before I left to come home.

This show is really different from the indoor flea market yesterday...it's a true antique show, made up almost entirely of dealers, many with the booth tags still on their items.  There are lots of real antiques (100 years old +), primitives and country pieces and a fair amount of depression glass.  I moved pretty quickly through those booths and focused on the kitschy, mid-century and vintage holidays, so the whole show didn't take long.

 These 'linen ladies' are one of my favorites.  I go to most of the shows they're at and always look for them.  Their linens are in mint or excellent condition, always washed and pressed and gorgeous. and their prices are fair, too!   You'll see the wonderful printed quilt I bought from them farther down the page.

Since an antique show is more expensive than a flea market, most of what I bought today is just for me.  Here's what I came home with:

I've had a putz fireplace on my wish list for years and found this one today!  I love the little gnome congregation on the top of the mantel (don't know if it came with it or if it was added) .  The fireplace is lit from the back with a single bulb -- can you see the little Santa Claus on the red plastic inside?

I didn't know I needed this Holt Howard Santa Claus until I saw it!  It's dated 1960 and has a singing reindeer, cat and mouse.  It holds 2 candles and has little holes in the top of the piano (I have no idea what they're for).

Christmas stockings are one of my weaknesses and this one is so wonderful!  Amazingly, this was the least expensive stocking that the dealer had and was easily the most unusual one.  I love the  artist elf!

As soon as I saw this daffodil printed quilt, I knew I had to have it -- it's just perfect for spring!  I was so thankful that it was a price I could afford.  Check out the detail in the pattern...

That's it for the weekend spending...tomorrow is 'dealer day' at the mall, when they open early for the dealers to work on their booths.  I think the daffodils have gotten me in the mood and it's time to start a spring display!

2 Crazy Days of Shopping - Day One: Maumee Antique Mall

Last Friday, my friend Bargain Hunter and I went out for a little 'retail therapy'.  We had planned to go to the M-15 garage sale (about 46 miles of garage sales), but decided to skip it because it was so chilly and rainy.  Since it didn't officially start until the next day (Saturday), we thought the early-bird sellers might just decide to wait and hope that the weather improved.  

Instead, we went to Maumee Antiques near Toledo, which has quickly become one of my absolute favorite malls!  It's in an old grocery store so it's really big and most of the booths are very well staged with lots of interesting stuff.  They even have shopping carts, which is good, since they don't have many (or any) floor walkers.  

I found some great things, with a definite mid-century vibe...

I think clowns are creepy, but I always like these homemade yo-yo clowns with the celluloid faces.  This little guy is only about 7" high.  The large apple bowl is fired-on Flamingo Pink & in perfect condition.

I loved this teal and basketweave train case!  

The mirror's gone and the seller has added this floral paper panel.  My friend Bargain Hunter likes it, but I think the panel has got to go -- how do you vote?

I loved this showboat musical jewelry box from 1965!  Do you think it's cool or tacky?

Mr. KV says the news magazine, called Quick, was like the ipad of the 50s, because of its caption:  "Get Quick at your newstand each Thursday and carry it in your pocket or your purse...and read it wherever you are"  We could just imagine a bus or restaurant full of 1950s people all reading their Quicks, the way people are all busy on their phones now!

After all those fun finds, you might think I wouldn't want to shop any more.  NOT SO!  We were all geared up and ready to go to the Antiques Flea Market at Davisburg the next day.  That's the next post, though.

Treasures from the Little Prince

Yesterday, I reported on the frog-sale and promised pictures of the things I got from the fun yard sale that followed.  Here they are!

A collection of Civil War bullets and a button or two -- now I have something new to research!.

A pair of Holt Howard mouse salt and peppers and some other fun plastic shakers.  Penguins seem to be very hot right now.

Some cool flash cards -- some with illustrations

Asian pictures -- in need of a good cleaning!  The pictures are okay, but I really liked the red mats and white box frames (so mid-century)

A 1960s chinese checkers game.  A regular checker board is on the back

This enamelware double boiler is in GREAT shape!

An old desk lamp -- also in need of cleaning.  It doesn't work (though they told me it did) and I don't know if I'll have to rewire it or just replace the fluorescent bulb

This is a short post and the pictures aren't great, but I've been really rushed!  We're going to a week-long conference where there will be lots of meetings and dinners (which means lots of wardrobe changes) and I've been letting my junking get in the way of my laundry and packing!  It's time to get to work.

 I went to Greenmead Flea Market today and brought home LOTS of vintage goodies.  I spent most of the afternoon sorting and finding basement space for all of it. That's a story for another day...
